A Storied Past

For over 200 years, Galveston Island has had an extensive changing history of European settlement. Pirates placed their flags on the ground, waves of refugees from Germany, Italy and Greece made their way to the island, deep roots were planted by wealthy merchants, all of which has shaped this fascinating barrier island.

Though most structures were destroyed as a result of The Great Storm of 1900, the community's leaders over the years have done an outstanding job of conserving the structures that still stand.

The Galveston Historical Foundation is one of these organizations, and below, you can see some of the treasures they maintain and you can visit:

1605 33rd Street

Galveston’s oldest residence and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Satisfy your “Seafood Tooth”

There’s no shortage of opportunities for seafood satisfaction on the island. One of the favorites to enjoy is what we locally call a “Boat to Table” day. This day can take many forms - and you don’t need a boat or a fishing pole to indulge! Visit a local seafood market and cook a meal at home or dine at one of Galveston's MANY seafood restaurants - you can't go wrong when it comes to this island's fresh options.

A Change in Scenery

If you can work anywhere, why not work at the beach? That doesn't just apply to the adults. In a world that some students are still calling ZOOM their classrooms, consider bringing the laptop to a vacation rental (or hotel) for some experiential education paired with a little after school fun in the sun at your fingertips.

Many families have decided to carve out time and hit the road to be together and experience the world around them, choosing “road schooling” over homeschooling. Continue reading one of the articles below for more inspiration:
