Average highs climb from the low 70s to the low 80s by May, and water temperatures rise from the mid-60s into the upper 70s. March can still bring the occasional cool front, so layers are smart. By May, it feels like summer has arrived early.

Early spring is one of the island’s sweet spots: warm enough for the beach, cool enough to wander Historic Downtown all afternoon, and far fewer crowds than summer. One of the best-value windows on the island. After Labor Day, hotel rates drop and you’ll have breathing room at restaurants and attractions. October weekends pick up around festival dates, but nothing close to summer. For the best mix of weather, price, and space, September through early November is hard to beat.

The Sandcastle Festival draws world-class sculptors to East Beach. Island Oktoberfest, the Galveston Shrimp Festival, and ARToberFest fill weekends with food, art, and live music. Día de los Muertos Fiesta brings rich cultural celebrations, and the Galveston Pirates Festival closes fall with costumed revelry.
