1900s Storm: The Deadliest Natural Disaster in the US

On September 8, 1900, a devastating hurricane struck Galveston, destroying large portions of the city and killing thousands of people. The Great Storm of 1900 remains the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history and permanently changed the course of Galveston.

Galveston's response became an extraordinary engineering story. Construction began on a massive concrete Seawall in 1902, with the original 3.3-mile section completed in 1904. At the same time, engineers undertook the Grade Raising, elevating sections of the city to provide greater protection from future storm surge. Around 2,000 buildings were raised on hand-turned jackscrews as streets, utilities and other infrastructure were lifted with them.

The project reshaped the island and created one of Galveston's most recognizable landmarks. Today, visitors can walk along the Seawall, visit the 1900 Storm Memorial, and explore surviving historic buildings that help tell the story of the disaster, rebuilding and resilience that followed.
