Looking Back Brown Bag Lecture Series: The Murder of Emmett Till
Discover an important chapter of American history during the Looking Back Brown Bag Lecture Series at Nia Cultural Center in downtown Galveston. On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, guest speaker David B. Dumas will present an informative discussion on "The Murder of Emmett Till," examining the historic case and its lasting significance.
Hosted by Nia Cultural Center, the Looking Back series invites attendees to learn about history, culture, and the people and events that have shaped our shared past. This month's presentation focuses on the 1955 murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy whose death became a pivotal moment in the American Civil Rights Movement.
Born in Galveston and a graduate of Central High School, David B. Dumas is an amateur historian and photographer with more than four decades of experience documenting historic sites. His interest in the Emmett Till case began while researching Civil War history in Mississippi, where he discovered historical markers connected to Till's murder. This discovery inspired him to investigate the case further, identify significant locations, and photograph the sites associated with the tragedy.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear about Dumas' historical research and gain a deeper understanding of this important moment in American history.
The lecture takes place Wednesday, October 21, from 12 to 1:30 PM at Nia Cultural Center, located at 2217 The Strand, Suite 101, in Galveston.
Guests are encouraged to bring their lunch and join this afternoon of history, learning, and reflection. All are welcome to attend.
