Mardi Gras, Contests this Holiday Season in Galveston

Mardi Gras in December? You heard that right!

Take Victorian charm, shopping opportunities galore and throw in some bon temps and you have the makings for a fun and festive holiday season on Galveston Island. Two new events give visitors the opportunity to exercise their right to vote, plus an Insta-worthy returning favorite are sure to add to the holiday spirit.

About the Mardi Gras Float Decorating Contest:

Island visitors are encouraged to view the festive floats on Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 from 5-10 p.m. at the Port of Galveston Cruise Terminal #1 located at 2502 Harborside Drive and vote for their favorites at VisitGalveston.com/FloatVote.

The Mardi Gras floats will be parked at Cruise Terminal #1 along a one-way route with the entry point at 23rd and Harborside Drive.

The floats will be stationary and drivers may view the floats from their own cars.

The Port of Galveston and Park Board will provide staff at the display to ensure crowd control and compliance with health and safety protocols.

Galveston is home to the third-largest Mardi Gras in the country. Normally on parade during festival weekends in February and March, several of these colorful floats will be on display in Historic Downtown Galveston two Saturdays in December. Local Mardi Gras krewes have been tasked with decorating the floats with over-the-top holiday themes for the chance to reign supreme! Island visitors are encouraged to view the festive floats on Dec. 12 and Dec. 19 from 5-10 p.m. at the Port of Galveston Cruise Terminal #1 located at 2502 Harborside Drive and vote for their favorites here on VisitGalveston.com.

In addition to enhanced holiday decorations downtown, more than 40 shops, galleries, businesses and boutiques will participate in the inaugural Galveston Holiday Tree Decorating Contest taking place from Dec.1 – Jan. 4. This exciting event lets shoppers admire the creatively decorated trees and gives them the opportunity to vote on their favorite entries. The trees also make for great holiday photo-ops!

The Galveston Elfie Selfie scavenger hunt challenges holiday visitors to Galveston to seek out Elfie Selfie stickers throughout the island and strike your happiest pose for a chance to win prizes. The promotion runs Dec. 1 – Jan. 3.
