Galveston is known for its beaches, historic architecture and one-of-a-kind attractions, but the true spirit of the island lives in its people.

Island Soul shares the stories of the artists, performers, preservationists, business owners, storytellers and local characters who make Galveston unlike anywhere else. Some were born here. Others found their way here and never left. Each has helped shape the island’s culture, protect its history or create the experiences visitors remember long after their trip.

Maureen Mezzino Patton has dedicated more than four decades to preserving one of Galveston's most treasured cultural landmarks, The Grand 1894 Opera House. A proud BOI (Born on Island), her leadership has guided the historic theater through celebrated performances, Hurricane Ike, and countless milestones while ensuring it remains a vibrant gathering place for the community. Her lifelong commitment to the arts has helped make The Grand an enduring symbol of Galveston's history, resilience, and cultural spirit.
