Hundreds of thousands of families can trace their arrival in the United States to this port city that is now the country’s 4th largest cruise port. Before the rise of West Coast entry ports, before air travel, before the world shrank to a screen in your pocket, millions of immigrants sailing toward a new American life made landfall right here.

Germans, Czechs, Portuguese, Poles, Mexicans, Italians, Swedes and more stepped off ships and onto these docks, many heading west to build the communities whose descendants fill soccer stadiums today. If your family has roots in the western United States, there is a real chance that you can trace their roots to Galveston.

Start at the Texas Seaport Museum on Pier 21, where Galveston's port history comes to life along the same waterfront that welcomed immigrants more than a century ago. Bishop’s Palace

From there, walk the streets of the East End and let Galveston's architecture do the talking. Bishop's Palace, built in 1892, is one of the most stunning Victorian mansions in the country and a testament to the wealth and ambition that made this city a world-class port.

Moody Mansion

Down the street, Moody Mansion tells the story of one of Texas's most powerful families and the city they helped shape after the devastating 1900 Storm nearly erased it from the map. Both properties pull you back into a Galveston that was booming, cosmopolitan and full of the kind of energy you now find in World Cup host cities.

Along Historic Downtown, there is another chapter of American history that belongs in this story.

Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger stood on this island and read the order freeing enslaved people in Texas. That day is now celebrated as Juneteenth, a federal holiday and one of the most significant moments in American history — and it happened here. Several locations across Galveston mark that legacy: the NIA Cultural Center and the Absolute Equality mural on The Strand, Reedy Chapel AME Church, and the U.S. Customs House, where word of emancipation spread across the city.

When World Cup matches are being played in late June, they will fall within days of that anniversary. The fans filling those stadiums come from every corner of the world. So did the people whose freedom was declared on this island. That is not a coincidence worth overlooking.
