The main colors are Gulf Blue, Wet Sand and Coastal White. The backs of the signs use Sand, Island Blue and Coral, pulled from the painted storefronts downtown and the beach houses along the coast.
Walk around to the back of some signs and you’ll find Gulf wildlife cut into the panels: sea turtles, dolphins, pelicans, sheepshead and more. Some live here year-round. Others, like the migratory birds, are just passing through, much like a lot of the people you’ll meet here. See how many you can spot.
Wind, salt air and Gulf sun are hard on anything outdoors. The signs are aluminum with a marine-grade finish, and they’re built in parts. A damaged panel can be repaired, and destination names can change as the Island does, without replacing the whole sign.
