Galveston Museums

Opened in 1997, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum lets guests enjoy learning about real operating offshore oil rigs by touring one. The Ocean Star is a retired jack-up drilling rig that operated in the Gulf from 1969 to 1984 and drilled over 200 wells. The museum boasts three floors of models, exhibits, equipment, and interactive displays related to offshore exploration and drilling. Step back into Galveston's maritime past at the Galveston Historic Seaport, where one of the nation's busiest nineteenth-century ports comes to life. Tour the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA, a National Historic Landmark and one of the world's few fully operational historic sailing ships, then explore the immersive Ship To Shore experience to follow the journey of immigrants arriving in America through Galveston. Together, these exhibits offer a powerful look at the people, ships, and stories that helped shape the island's history.

Curated by Clarence Josey, the museum showcases photographs and artifacts honoring local trailblazers who helped shape the island’s history. Highlights include a rare collection of yearbooks, such as a 1946 edition from Central High School, the first high school for African American students in Texas.

Restored in 1895, this Galveston landmark was originally the home of one of the country's wealthiest people in the 1950s, W.L. Moody, Jr. The property is still full of original family memorabilia and is available for rent for private parties and events.
