Galveston Island Celebrates America’s 250th Birthday with Historic Fourth of July Festivities Along the Texas Coast

Against the backdrop of the Gulf and one of Texas’ most storied coastal communities, Galveston’s Fourth of July festivities will honor America’s past while creating lasting memories for a new generation of visitors. From the legendary Battleship Texas and the island’s annual Independence Day Parade to a dazzling fireworks display over the Gulf, plus attractions and fireworks at Moody Gardens, Galveston Island offers one of the state’s most memorable destinations for America’s 250th birthday celebration.

“America’s 250th birthday is a once-in-a-generation milestone, and Galveston is uniquely positioned to celebrate our nation’s history, resilience and spirit,” Visit Galveston Executive Director Tony Lyle said. “With our rich military heritage, maritime history and iconic coastal setting, there’s no better place to gather with family and friends to commemorate this historic occasion.”

Historic Battleship Texas Activation
A centerpiece of the island’s 2026 celebration will be special Independence Day programming at the historic Battleship Texas. On Friday, July 3, the public is invited to gather at Pier 21 to view a drone display, gun turret salutes and a fireworks display from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. The event is free. As one of the last remaining dreadnought battleships in existence and a veteran of both World Wars, Battleship Texas serves as a powerful symbol of American service and sacrifice.

Galveston’s Elissa Joins Sail250 Celebration in New York Harbor
Further underscoring Galveston’s role in the nation’s 250th commemoration, the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa —the Official Tall Ship of Texas—will represent the Lone Star State during America’s Sail250 celebrations in New York Harbor July 3-8. Operated by the Galveston Historical Foundation, Elissa is one of the oldest continuously sailed vessels in the world and one of only a handful of historic ships still actively sailing today.

As millions gather in New York to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, Elissa’s participation places Galveston at the center of the national celebration, showcasing the island’s rich maritime heritage on one of the world’s most prominent stages.

Annual Independence Day Parade Along the Seawall
Galveston’s beloved Fourth of July Parade returns to Seawall Boulevard, bringing together decorated floats, marching groups, military tributes, community organizations and patriotic displays. The parade will travel along the island’s iconic beachfront boulevard, offering spectators front-row views of one of Texas’ most scenic Independence Day traditions. The parade will kick off

Saturday at 6 p.m. on Seawall Boulevard starting at 22nd Street and continue west to 45th Street. After the parade, the island will host a 20-minute fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. near 37th Street and Seawall Boulevard. The fireworks show is sponsored by the City of Galveston and the Galveston Park Board of Trustees.

Moody Gardens Offers Fireworks and Family-Friendly Fun
Families can continue the celebration throughout the holiday weekend at Moody Gardens. As part of their Beats on the Beach live music performances at Palm Beach, Moody Gardens will host a fireworks display slated to begin at 9:15 on July 4.
