Connecting Galveston History to World History: Community Listening Session
Discover the stories that connect Galveston to the wider world during a free community listening session at the Rosenberg Library on Saturday, November 14, 2026. Hosted by the Monuments Toolkit, a program of World Heritage USA, this gathering invites residents, visitors and community partners to share perspectives on Galveston's historical significance and its place in national and international history.
Rather than a traditional presentation, the session will center on small-group conversations led by local co-facilitators. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on Galveston's history as a major port and gateway for migration and trade, its connections to the history of enslavement and its significance as the place where news of freedom arrived on June 19, 1865.
Monuments Toolkit staff will serve as neutral facilitators while listening to community stories, memories and perspectives. The comments shared during the session will be documented and summarized in a report that will be made available to participants and the wider community.
Whether you have deep family ties to Galveston or are simply interested in learning more about the island's place in world history, this gathering offers an opportunity to contribute to a broader understanding of the community's heritage.
The event takes place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, at
