What Was the Great Storm of 1900?

In 1900, Galveston was just 8.7 feet above sea level at its highest point. With little warning, and no modern forecasting systems, residents were blindsided as the Gulf waters inundated homes and businesses. The aftermath was horrific.

The storm destroyed more than 3,600 buildings, leaving over 10,000 residents homeless.

Yet, out of this tragedy emerged a city determined to rebuild stronger and safer.

The Aftermath and the Rebuilding of Galveston

In the wake of the storm, Galveston began one of the most ambitious civil engineering projects in history:

  • The Seawall Construction: To protect against future hurricanes, a 17-foot-tall seawall was built along the coastline, a structure that still stands today.
  • Raising the Island: Over 2,000 buildings were elevated as the island itself was raised by pumping sand from the Gulf, a monumental feat of engineering and determination.
