Women in Coastal Science Speaker Series
Discover the science behind Galveston’s coastal ecosystems during the September installment of Women in Coastal Science at R.A. Apffel Beach Park! This free public program welcomes Dr. Yasmina Shah Esmaeili, a marine ecologist and postdoctoral scientist at the University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute.
Dr. Esmaeili studies coastal biodiversity and ecology, with a focus on understanding how human activity and environmental change affect coastal species and habitats. Her research includes the use of environmental DNA, or eDNA, an emerging tool that helps scientists better understand and monitor marine ecosystems.
During the program, guests will hear about Dr. Esmaeili’s career journey and her work in coastal research, conservation, and science communication. Originally from Belgium, her career has taken her to Brazil, Maine, and now the Texas coast. She is also an avid birdwatcher with a special interest in coastal birds. Dr. Esmaeili co-founded the Gulf eDNA Network and Ocean on Tap Texas, two initiatives that help connect scientists and communities through marine science.
Women in Coastal Science takes place Friday, September 25, at R.A. Apffel Beach Park in Galveston. Networking and light snacks begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the presentation at 10 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
