Lectures at The Bryan: The Fight for Civil Rights in South Texas
In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. Barrera, professor of history at South Texas College in McAllen, will explore the history of Latinos and Mexican Americans in the United States.
His presentation will examine civil rights, social movements, cultural identity, and educational activism during the 20th century. Dr. Barrera will also discuss the challenges Mexican Americans faced in Texas and the role Chicano students played in challenging and reshaping the education system.
This three-part lecture series is in conjunction with America 250 and features respected scholars and community members, the series will explore the fight for civil rights in South Texas, unlikely heroes of the American Revolution, and Jewish immigration to America.
