Menard Park is named after Michel B. Menard, a Canadian-born trader and real estate investor who was instrumental in the founding of Galveston. In 1836, he acquired a significant portion of land on the east end of Galveston Island, leading to the establishment of the city.
Adjacent to the park is the historic Michel B. Menard House, built in 1838. It is the oldest surviving structure in Galveston and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is an example of Greek Revival architecture and has been restored to reflect its historical significance.
