How to Have a Romantic Getaway on Galveston Island

Having a romantic getaway in Galveston is about so much more than sunsets and couple massages.

It’s about having a special place to call “yours.” A place filled with historic charm and relaxing ambiance that draws you closer to each other. A place that you can explore again and again – together.

Where to Stay

The San Luis Resort

If you're looking for a classic resort vibe, The San Luis Resort has it. With guestrooms facing the Gulf of Mexico, you're sure to have a fabulous view, plus you'll enjoy the convenience of on-site restaurants and a spa. The primary appeal is The Cove - its oasis-like outdoor pool wrapped with palm trees and cabanas. You can soak up the sun and enjoy a relaxing day with sea breezes, lively music, and poolside service.

Where to Stay

Built in 1911, this majestic hotel has all the historic charm one could want for a romantic stay. With scenic beachfront views, elegant décor reminiscent of its storied past and plenty of amenities (like free bicycle rentals or the award-winning Sunday champagne brunch), you’ll feel a world away at Grand Galvez, whether enjoying time by the pool or walking the hotel’s impressive Hall of History.

A Quaint Vacation Rental

Vacation rental properties abound in Galveston and they offer characteristics as different as those who seek them. From historic cottages near downtown shopping and dining to west-end beachside homes complete with pools, a home of one's own could be just the thing to infuse some romance in any relationship!

What to Do

Bicycle through the East End Historical District

To get the best view of Galveston's extensive collection of historic architecture, take a bicycle tour through the East End Historical District, where ornately painted houses line the streets in Victorian, Greek Revival, Queen Anne and other architectural styles. This is a great morning activity to do on your way to breakfast at the neighborhood's favorite mom-and-pop eatery, Sunflower Bakery. While in the area, visit the must-see 1892 Bishop’s Palace for a quick photo or an interior tour. Either way, it is stunning.

Tip: Grand Galvez offers complimentary bicycles on property. Or, you can rent one from Island Bicycle Co. at 18th and Seawall.

Historic Downtown Galveston

Along the harbor, historic downtown Galveston’s architecture creates the perfect backdrop for perusing the district’s many boutiques, antique shops, and coastal-inspired art galleries. A visit to La King’s Confectionery is always in order (as is indulging in its irresistible chocolates, ice cream, and fresh saltwater taffy). Taking a harbor tour boat ride from Pier 21 or enjoying local dining are also enjoyable experiences.

Tip: If you need a break while downtown, grab a latte or tea and sit under the pergolas at MOD Coffeehouse on Postoffice Street.

Where to Eat & Drink

Breakfast: Gumbo Diner

For a casual breakfast spot, Gumbo Diner opens at 7 a.m. every day with a large assortment of Southern comfort items, like chicken and waffles or biscuits and gravy, as well as traditional fare like omelets, pancakes, steak and eggs and more.

Tip: If you happen to be in town on a Sunday, don’t miss the chance to experience the elaborate Sunday Brunch at Grand Galvez.

BLVD Seafood is an excellent choice for lunch. It's intimate, stylish and serves plenty of options, including locally sourced seafood and quality meats. This joint is known for its sliders, fish tacos and my personal favorite, seafood chowder (made with coconut milk and cream base).

Dinner: Vargas Cut & Catch

Walk hand-in-hand along artsy Postoffice Street before making your way to Vargas Cut & Catch, the latest venture from the creators of the award-winning Rudy & Paco Restaurant (an OpenTable Top 100 restaurant in America). Inside, you'll experience all the elegance of a contemporary steakhouse, from its décor and floor-to-ceiling wine cellar to its selection of USDA prime steaks and fresh seafood. The ambiance, food and location in a gorgeous historic building are all the ingredients you need for a perfect evening with your honey.
