Galveston Seawall Secures World Record

Thank You, Galveston!

On Saturday, September 7, more than 6,000 Galvestonians and visitors came together along the Galveston Seawall to honor the 125th anniversary of the 1900 Storm, the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Participants lined the Seawall from 23rd to 61st Street, standing in solidarity to remember the lives lost and to celebrate the strength, resilience, and unity of our island community.

History

Following the ceremonial gathering, a special commemorative ceremony was held at The Great Storm statue near 47th Street, featuring remarks from Mayor Craig Brown, Col. David Dake of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Dwayne Jones of the Galveston Historical Foundation, and a presentation from GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ representative.

This powerful event supported Galveston’s effort to earn official recognition for the Longest Walkway in the World, highlighting the historic importance of the Seawall as both a coastal defense and a symbol of the city’s resilience.

History of the Seawall

On September 8, 1900, a devastating hurricane and tidal wave destroyed much of Galveston, claiming more than 6,000 lives. In response, a team of engineers was appointed to design protections, leading to a massive effort to raise the city’s elevation by up to 12 feet. A solid concrete seawall was also constructed along the Gulf shore, creating a critical defense against future storms.

The original Galveston Seawall, begun in 1902, stretched 3.3 miles and stood 17 feet high, built on wooden pilings and reinforced with sand and stone. Its curved Gulf-facing design helped deflect powerful waves, proving its effectiveness during the devastating 1915 hurricane. Expanded over time, the seawall has protected the island for generations and supported Galveston’s growth into a modern, thriving city.

Located along the Galveston Seawall, the 1900 Storm Memorial and historical marker honor the victims of the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. The bronze sculpture, installed in 2000, pays tribute to those lost and the resilience of those who rebuilt. Nearby, the marker tells the story of the island’s remarkable recovery, including the massive effort to raise the city and construct the seawall.
