Galveston Island Seawall Secures World Record

On Saturday, September 7, more than 6,000 Galvestonians and visitors came together along the Galveston Seawall to honor the 125th anniversary of the 1900 Storm, the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Participants lined the Seawall from 23rd to 61st Street, standing in solidarity to remember the lives lost and to celebrate the strength, resilience, and unity of our island community.

Following the ceremonial gathering, a special commemorative ceremony was held at The Great Storm statue near 47th Street, featuring remarks from Mayor Craig Brown, Col. David Dake of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Dwayne Jones of the Galveston Historical Foundation, and a presentation from GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ representative.

This powerful event supported Galveston’s effort to earn official recognition for the Longest Walkway in the World, highlighting the historic importance of the Seawall as both a coastal defense and a symbol of the city’s resilience.
