Seawall Overview

For over a century, Galveston Island’s Seawall has been a beloved gathering place for beachgoers, photographers, food lovers, and shoppers.

Standing 17 feet above sea level and spanning more than 10 miles, the Seawall is home to some of the island’s most popular beaches and attractions. Biking, walking, or simply taking in the views, visitors can enjoy the longest continuous sidewalk in the United States. For convenience, there are six public restrooms that include outdoor showers for rinsing off.

Beyond the beach, the Seawall is lined with restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and family-friendly attractions, making it the perfect spot to spend a day soaking up Galveston Island’s cool coastal atmosphere.

Seawall Boulevard parking is secure and convenient, as now visitors can pay for parking through the PayByPhone mobile app or call (409) 797-5198. Payments are associated with a single license plate, so there’s no need to display a receipt on your vehicle’s dash. The rate is $2 per hour with a two-hour minimum (maximum $16 per day); Annual Seawall Parking Passes are available for only $45.

Operating hours are 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, 7 days a week. Free parking is available on the north side of the Seawall between 12th and 19th Streets, 33rd and 39th Streets, 53rd and 61st Streets, and 85th and 91st Streets. All other parking along Seawall Boulevard consists of paid spots.

West Seawall is where the beach opens up, and the crowds thin out. Babe's Beach anchors this stretch — one of the widest, most open stretches of sand on the island and a favorite for locals looking for more room.

For food and drinks, Jimmy's on the Pier offers casual dining over the water. McNeal's Tavern is a neighborhood bar worth knowing — low-key and local. Pelican and the Shark rounds out the options with a relaxed spot to eat and drink without the Seawall crowds.

Shopping & Beach Access

For shopping, Kites Unlimited is a Galveston staple — a good stop for kites, beach toys, and outdoor gear that's hard to find anywhere else on the island. Access is easy from 61st Street, so it's convenient without feeling busy. This end of the Seawall draws beachgoers who want more space, a slower pace, and a more local feel.

Breaks from the Sun

When you need a break from the sun, Primetime Entertainment has you covered — catch a movie or go bowling without leaving the Seawall area. The Galveston Fishing Pier gives anglers a dedicated spot to cast without needing a boat — one of the better setups on the island.

If you're visiting on a summer weekend and want actual elbow room on the beach, head west of 61st Street. The difference is noticeable.

Central Seawall is the busiest stretch of Galveston's beachfront — where most of the hotels, restaurants, and activity are concentrated. This is where families, groups, and first-time visitors naturally land.

Nick’s Kitchen & Beach Bar at Gaido’s Seaside Inn offers Gulf views, fresh seafood, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere right on the Seawall. Nearby, The Gumbo Diner serves classic Gulf Coast comfort food, while Rainforest Cafe adds family-friendly fun to the dining scene. For drinks with a view, Float Pool & Patio Bar and The Spot are perfect places to unwind by the water. With hotels, restaurants, and beachfront views all within walking distance, this stretch of the Seawall is ideal for a laid-back island outing.

Shopping

For shopping and gear, Ohana Surf & Skate is the go-to for boards and surf equipment. Dolphin World is a well-stocked souvenir shop with a wide variety of gifts and beach finds. Joy Bike Rental is a convenient option for getting up and down the Seawall without dealing with parking.

Parking fills up fast on weekends. If you're coming mid-morning or later, look for spots a block or two off the Seawall and walk down.

The eastern end of the Seawall is where the beaches are less crowded, and the history runs deep. This is the older, more charming end of the island — and honestly, a better starting point than the busier central stretch. You get Gulf access without the congestion, and the charm here tells more of Galveston's story.

Galveston's Seawall Interpretive Trail

Project SIT is a beautification program on Galveston’s (Texas) Historic Seawall. The program transformed 70 concrete benches with educational mosaics providing an interpretation of Galveston Island, Galveston Bay, and the Gulf’s coastal and ocean processes, natural resources, recreational opportunities, coastal heritage, and multiple uses of our coast. Each bench, therefore, builds awareness and inspires action to conserve our natural resources.

For food and drinks, Miller's Seawall Grill is a local staple for Gulf views and comfort food. Benno's on the Beach keeps it simple with casual seafood steps from the water. Saltgrass Steak House is a reliable option when you want something more substantial. Longboard Pool Bar, located in front of the DoubleTree Hotel, is a laid-back spot for drinks — the swim-up bar makes it an easy afternoon stop.

Shopping and Attractions

Murdoch's and the Pleasure Pier sit right over the water, giving you two covered spots to browse, eat, or just get out of the sun without leaving the beachfront. Murdoch's is one of the better souvenir shops on the island — well-stocked and right on the Gulf. Want a different view of the island? Galveston Helicopter Tours departs from this stretch — a quick way to see the coastline from above.

For a place to stay, Hotel Lucine is a boutique option right on this stretch with excellent dining options and a rooftop bar overlooking the Gulf, within walking distance of everything here. Or, for a more historic experience, consider the Grand Galvez. An island landmark for more than a century, the Grand Galvez is the only historic beachfront hotel on the Texas Gulf Coast. Known as the “Queen of the Gulf,” it blends timeless elegance with modern luxury just steps from the beach.

If you're visiting on a busy weekend, start here instead of Central Seawall. The beaches are wider, the crowds are smaller, and you're still close to everything.

This decal marks the Galveston Seawall, officially recognized in September 2025 as the longest continuous walkway in the world. The achievement honored the 125th anniversary of the 1900 Storm, which claimed more than 8,000 lives. In the years that followed, Galveston raised the island’s grade and built the Seawall to protect the community, shaping the island you see today.
