Make plans to join us at Nia Cultural Center while we celebrate our history through our "Looking Back" Brown Bag Lecture Series, which will feature David and Philip O'Neal to honor the "The Power and Influence of the African American ILA's of Galveston"
David H. O’Neal, Jr. is a 77-year-old, who is a product of the International
Longshoreman Association (ILA) as his father, David H. O'Neal was a career
longshoreman and foreman. David worked on the docks since he was 17 years old. He
is a member of the GHF, AAHC and the OCCC and a novice historian about working on
the ILA docks and the chronology of that work and the officers and workers of
Galveston longshoremen.
Additionally, his brother Philip O’Neal is the former Vice-
President of the African American Local 851 and past President of consolidated ILA
Local 20. He is currently the longest tenured board member of Galveston ISD with 31
years of service.
