Reedy Chapel AME Church
Reedy Chapel A.M.E. Church
located at 2015 Broadway, is the oldest A.M.E. congregation in Texas, established in 1848. Originally formed by enslaved people worshipping separately, it became a formal A.M.E. church in 1867 under Rev. M.M. Clark and was later named after Rev. Houston Reedy.
It holds deep historical importance as one of the first places where Juneteenth was publicly celebrated after Union General Granger announced the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas in 1865. Reedy Chapel remains a key site for annual Juneteenth events.
The current building, completed in 1886 after the original was destroyed in a fire, features Gothic Revival architecture and houses one of Texas’s oldest pipe organs. Despite damage from the 1900 hurricane, it was restored and continues to serve its community.
Designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Reedy Chapel is both a functioning church and a lasting symbol of African American history in Texas.
