Each spring, Galveston Island welcomes thousands of migrating birds—and the birders and photographers eager to see them. FeatherFest offers a front-row seat to this natural spectacle, with opportunities to explore the island’s diverse coastal habitats. This weeklong festival invites you to experience the outdoors in unforgettable ways—whether you’re scanning the shoreline for shorebirds, capturing the perfect shot of a roseate spoonbill, or joining expert-led excursions that bring you closer to nature.

Event Details

FeatherFest is among the largest birding festivals in Texas—and one of the few that also features a dedicated nature photography track. With expert guides leading the way, you’ll explore Galveston’s diverse habitats, spotting migratory and resident species in their natural environment. It’s also a chance to connect with fellow birders and outdoor enthusiasts from across the country, sharing favorite sightings, memorable field experiences, and the excitement of each new discovery.

The Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council preludes the annual event with the Birding & Nature Photo Contest, AKA FeatherFest PhotoFest that offers serious AND casual nature photographers the opportunity to appreciate the spring migration. There are even prizes!

Galveston, on the Upper Texas Coast, is on the Central Flyway — a migratory flight path from South America to Canada. It offers birds a variety of natural habitats — beaches, wetlands, grasslands, woods, ponds, and bays — for the many that stop on their way north or south, others that winter here, or those that live in Galveston year-round.

What should I bring to FeatherFest?
