Michel B Menard Home
1838 Michel B. Menard House
Galveston's oldest home has a story worth telling. Built in 1838 by Michel B. Menard — Texas pioneer, Republic statesman, and the very founder of Galveston Island — this Greek Revival landmark was constructed before the island had the craftsmen to build it. Ten massive columns and the materials to raise them were shipped by schooner from Maine, arriving on a shoreline still finding its footing.
The house hosted the island's first Mardi Gras celebration. It survived storms, time, and nearly the wrecking ball — saved in the 1990s by the Galveston Historical Foundation before a full restoration brought it back. In 1995, 6,500 visitors walked through its doors during the Historic Homes Tour alone.
Distinct wooden carvings. A layout that speaks to early Texas life. A presence that anchors everything Galveston has been and still is.
